2012 Lewis Summer Intern Program Structure

Orientation: June 6, 7 and 8

The orientation is an in-depth introduction to the structure and goals of The Harriet and Maurice Lewis Family Summer Intern Program and to the Chicago Jewish community at large. It includes meetings with professional and lay leaders of the Jewish Federation, team-building activities and a mini-mission to member agencies.  Orientation provides the interns with a wonderful opportunity to meet the other interns and The Harriet and Maurice Lewis Family Summer Intern Program staff.

We understand that certain universities and colleges have finals during this week, and that will not impact an intern's eligibility for the program.

Field Work Placements: June 11 - August 3

Interns work full time in supervised placements in agencies and departments of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. Interns must be available to fulfill all work requirements during this time period and need to schedule their summer vacations accordingly. Opportunities are available in the fields of:

  • Public Policy
  • Social Work
  • Psychology
  • Education
  • Health Care
  • Communications
  • Grant writing
  • Accounting
  • Development
  • Marketing
  • Business
  • Non-profit management

Assignment is made on the basis of agency need and the individual student's interests or qualifications as discussed in the interview.

Weekly Seminars in Professional Development and Jewish Community

Seminars on Monday evenings and Thursday mornings of selected professional development concepts along with issues currently facing the organized Jewish community from multiple perspectives. Format may include discussions, simulations, guest speakers, and briefings from agency staff. Informal social activities are often a by-product of these group interactions. A Shabbat retreat experience will be included.

JUF/JFNA Student Campaign

  • Through firsthand experience, interns will learn how the Jewish United Fund supports Jewish communities in Chicago, Israel and worldwide. The focus will be on the concept of Tzedakah and the processes of fundraising and allocations, as well as the personal decision- making process.
  • Through creative educational and social venues, interns will implement their own JUF/JFNA campaign within the intern community.
  • Interns will be asked to make a voluntary gift to the JUF campaign as a reflection of their commitment to the Jewish community.

Israel/Chicago Partnership 2000 Interns/Kiev Kehilla Interns

Two Israeli young adults from Kiryat Gat and two Ukrainian young adults from Kiev are invited to intern in selected agencies as Lewis Summer Interns. This is an opportunity for all to forge new friendships and gain new insights. Interns are encouraged to extend their hospitality to our overseas guests.
