Chicago choir performed in Israel

10/27/2010

In late summer, the Soul Children of Chicago shared their unique musical stylings with choirs from across the world at the Zimriya World Assembly of Choirs in Jerusalem and then performed at the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat. Traveling under the direction of choir founder Walter Whitman, the group spent an afternoon in Jerusalem with youth “ambassadors” from Petach Tikva, which has been a Chicago Sister City since 1994.

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago helped support the trip and participated in a “bon voyage” press conference at City Hall, hosted by Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

“The excitement of these talented hard-working young people was tangible as they prepared to visit Israel and to connect with counterparts from Israel and the world,” said JUF Executive Vice President Michael Kotzin, who also serves on the Petach Tikva Sister Cities Committee. “They were wonderful representatives of Chicago and came back enriched by their experience of seeing the real Israel and connecting with its people.”

The Soul Children of Chicago is a group of Chicago public school students, who have released five albums in the past 20 years and performed worldwide.
