To help celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel Independence Day), the Israel Consulate to the Midwest brought to Chicago an Israeli Scouts performing troupe. The talented group made up entirely of Ethiopian Israeli youth gave an energetic performance of song and dance at the annual consulate reception. The following day, the group visited two local high schools, Urban Prep Academy and Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. Coordinated by JUF’s Jewish Community Relations Council, the Israeli teens performed and shared their personal stories and talked about life in Israel. For the Chicago African American and Latino students, it was their first time meeting Israelis and learning about the rich diversity of Israeli society. Cristo Rey is one of the 13 Archdiocese high schools where JUF’s Israel Education Center’s Modern Israel curriculum is being taught.
