I started serving at the Uptown Cafe when I was in sixth grade for my Bat Mitzvah project.
I went to the cafe throughout sixth and seventh grade, took a little break during eighth grade, and returned to the cafe when I was a freshman in high school. To this day, I am still serving there and I enjoy just as much as I did when I was 12 years old.
Last year, I introduced the cafe to my two friends, Audrey and Lucy, and serving at the cafe became a monthly activity for us. It started out as something we did for community service hours but it was the wonderful feeling serving at the cafe gave us that brought us back each time. All three of us have had an amazing experience serving the people who come to the cafe and we wanted to share this experience with the rest of our school. The connections we have made with the customers and the joy we have brought them are just two examples of what we have gotten out of our experiences with the cafe.
Our teacher, who had joined us for many of our trips to the cafe, suggested that we make a club at our school and round up a group of people every month to join us. Audrey, Lucy, and I loved this idea and decided to go ahead and create the club. So far, we have dates set up for the next few months for a group of five or six kids to go down and serve. We also plan on doing a food drive during the year so we can send supplies to the cafe. Our goal is to give back to them as much as possible because they have given us so much.
Being able to start this club at school for something that I have been doing for so long has been such an uplifting experience and I hope this club lasts even after
