What does the Jewish Women's Foundation do?
Since 1997, the Jewish Women's Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (JWF) has worked to expand and improve opportunities and choices in all aspects of Jewish women and girls' lives through strategic and effective grant-making. In our short history, we have grown from a small group of committed donors into one of the largest Jewish Women's Foundations in the country. To date, we have raised a pledged endowment of over $7.6 million, and awarded over $1.7 million to 104 projects.
The JWF seeks to promote systemic change by funding projects which improve the overall status and well-being of Jewish women and girls and by targeting the root causes of the challenges we face. The foundation funds organizations that address issues through a "gender lens" and a "Jewish lens" because we recognize that Jewish women and girls have unique needs both because of our gender and our religious and cultural heritage.
JWF grants are awarded to programs serving women and girls in the Chicago area, across the United States, in Israel and around the world. Our grants work to:
- Secure women's health and safety
- Grow strong and self-assured girls
- Increase women's economic power
- Promote Jewish women's education and leadership

We started with a vision. Chicago women, pooling our philanthropic resources, would focus on issues often ignored in the Jewish community. We believed that together, with a collective voice, we could bring positive change for Jewish women and girls. Today, the Jewish Women's Foundation (JWF), an independent program of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, brings Jewish women together to pool resources and democratically allocate dollars. As a JWF member, you'll experience how rewarding strategic and effective grant-making can be.
In addition to helping decide where the foundation dollars go, you'll be educated by experts on timely issues in philanthropy.
How the Foundation Operates
The JWF has a diverse membership of over 240 trustees whose generous contributions are pooled into an endowed fund. Unlike many other foundations, the JWF offers trustees the unique opportunity to take a hands-on approach to our grant-making. JWF trustees can serve on committees, read grant proposals, conduct site visits, and ultimately vote on which projects will have the most impact on the lives of Jewish women and girls.
In addition to our grant-making, the JWF provides ongoing opportunities for trustee education and leadership on current issues and trends impacting Jewish women and girls, as well as on best practices in the field of philanthropy.
Our members join JWF with varied backgrounds and experience, yet all share a strong desire for women to grow, learn, and experience equality.
Our membership of talented, intelligent, and motivated women make a difference in the lives of Jewish women and girls in Chicago, Israel and throughout the world.
- An endowing gift of $10,000 establishes a five-year membership on the Foundation's Board of Trustees
- A gift of $50,000 creates a Lifetime Membership
- A gift of $100,000 opens a Lifetime and Transgenerational Membership for you and all current and future generations of your family
