Michel Lis truly embodies what it means to be a
mensch.
A resident at the Jean Morgenstern Libenu Home in Chicago, Michel
is a leader among his peers and respected throughout the Jewish community. On
any given week, you can find Michel attending Shabbat services, delivering
groceries to those in need, running a marathon for charity and teaching others
about inclusion, acceptance and belonging.
Michel's leadership skills
were most evident when the pandemic hit, and homes went into strict lockdown.
Residents were faced with the task of preparing for Shabbat and the holidays on
their own. Michel steered the ship for his home, referring to his housemates as
his "band of brothers." He led Shabbat meals, arranged for megillah readings,
and ensured he and his housemates were able to participate in and enjoy their
Jewish traditions throughout the pandemic.
Michel currently attends
Oakton Community College, where he studies meteorology. He hopes to one day
become a meteorologist.

HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK:
I lead services and act as Gabbai at several synagogues in
our community. I know everyone’s name and make a point to greet each person with
a smile. I learned the tunes and unique siddurim in each congregation so that
people who are davening with me feel comfortable and can follow along. I also
study with a chavruta in the community and I love to share deep insights on the
Torah portion.
HOW YOU JEW IN CHICAGO:
I am a proud Libenu resident and I promote inclusion and
belonging through participating in Jewish communal life.
