Community News

I hope you and yours are enjoying Summer! We kicked off June with an incredible Cooperative Jewish Council Shabbat! It was lovely to see more than 125 community members coming together to celebrate. It was also fun that JUF was able to provide a bus to bring a group of South Suburban residents to enjoy a unique drone show celebration of Israel in downtown Chicago.

We hope you will continue to take advantage of more opportunities to connect later this summer.

Looking ahead, our South Suburban knitting group will meet on July 19, contact the Shir Tikvah office for more details.

JUF Young Families is hosting a Bagels in the Park program on July 30 from 10-12 at Patriots Park in Homewood. Register here for this fun and free program!

We’re excited about a full and exciting slate of JUF Mini-Grant Programs later this summer, including:

  • A Make Your Own Tallit Program at Joliet Jewish Congregation
  • A Performance by the Maxwell Street Klezmer Quintet at Shir Tikvah
  • A Program about the Art of Baking Bread at Shir Tikvah

More details, and information about registration for each is included in this newsletter. Please continue to check the CJC Calendar, and check your synagogue newsletters for these and other community programs moving forward.

As always, Shalom Over 50 continues on Tuesdays at Shir Tikvah with lunch and entertainment. Interested in more information about this group? Contact Ilene or Suzy.

As you may have heard, JUF has made the difficult decision to close the South Suburban office. Given its deep connection and history with this community, JUF will be maintaining several key programs including the Mini Grant Program, and support for Shalom Over 50, and is working with local Jewish leaders to determine how best to work collaboratively moving forward. If you have any specific questions or resource needs after July 1st, please reach out to Karen Galin at KarenGalin@juf.org or 312.357.4746. It's been my pleasure working with you for the past 3 1/2 years and I wish you all the best.

All Rise The Sacred Art of Baking Bread

Join us at Shir Tikvah on Sunday, August 27, for a FREE challah workshop with Rabbi Joel Mosbacher, founder of All Rise Community, as we explore the intersection of sustenance and sacred story. In this 90-minute workshop, participants will have fun together, learn how to prepare challah dough, and go home with ready-to-bake loaves. In addition, we'll also come away knowing more about each other, what we each need to thrive in our lives, and what our sacred stories can tell us about who we are and what we can envision for the future.

Rabbi Joel Mosbacher, founder of All Rise Community, also served as Senior Rabbi of Temple Shaaray Tefila in New York. He is also national co-chair of the Gun Safety Consortium, a gun violence prevention organization. He has baked challah with b'nai mitzvah students, grief support groups, teens, families, and more.
