Chicago – Nir Oz Partnership
On October 7, Kibbutz Nir Oz was among the hardest-hit communities along the Gaza border. Of its 416 residents, 117 were murdered or taken hostage and nearly every home was destroyed or looted. Over 80% of the surviving residents relocated to temporary housing in Kiryat Gat, within JUF Chicago’s Partnership region, where they have begun the long process of rebuilding their lives and community.
Recognizing both the deep trauma and the extraordinary resilience of this community, JUF established a dedicated, multi-year partnership to accompany Nir Oz in its recovery and renewal. The partnership is guided entirely by the needs and priorities as defined by the kibbutz itself and implemented in close coordination with its leadership.
JUF’s support follows several core principles: it does not replace government aid; it focuses on strengthening the community as a whole; it prioritizes long-term initiatives that build the kibbutz’s future capacity; and it responds flexibly to immediate needs identified by the community.
Supporting Economic Recovery
Working hand-in-hand with Nir Oz’s leadership, JUF assists in advancing initiatives that the community has defined as vital for its economic rehabilitation.
A central focus has been the rebuilding and expansion of the Nir Ma’on Dairy Farm – a joint venture of Kibbutzim Nir Oz and Nir Am that was heavily damaged and looted on October 7. With JUF’s support, a comprehensive business plan was developed, followed by investments in infrastructure, herd expansion and permits to increase milk production capacity. The farm is now regaining its footing and becoming a key economic and social anchor, providing employment and financial stability for the community.
Supporting Children and Youth
At the kibbutz’s request, JUF has also provided vital support for informal education and resilience-building programs for Nir Oz’s children and youth.
These programs address the trauma and disruption caused by displacement, helping restore stability, belonging and joy to the young members of the community.
These programs are designed to meet the different needs of children and teens of various age groups, combining educational and emotional-resilience activities. They include participation of Nir Oz youth in summer camps in the Chicago area and additional formal and informal education initiatives selected directly by the kibbutz’s professional educational teams based on the community’s evolving needs.
In addition, special initiatives ensure that Nir Oz children who are not currently living with the main group in Kiryat Gat receive equal access to educational and enrichment programs, reflecting JUF’s commitment to care for the entire community wherever its members are.
