Black Honey: The Life and Poetry of Avraham Sutzkever

Sunday, November 10, 2019 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM <Add to Calendar>

Join RJD for another night out at the theater for the Israeli Film Festival!

Documentary. 76 min.
In Hebrew, Yiddish, and English with English subtitles.
$18 per ticket

Synopsis:
Russian-born poet Abraham Sutzkever is, by many accounts, the greatest Yiddish writer of modern times. He wrote with wit and passion through the darkness of the Holocaust by leading the Paper Brigade, an underground resistance group that hid a cache of Jewish cultural items to protect them from destruction by the Nazis. Sutzkever was saved by a special rescue plane sent for him by Stalin, and later testified at the Nuremberg trials against the Nazi who murdered his mother and son. However, as long as he lived, he would not let a film about his life be made. Black Honey uncovers this extraordinary life through Sutzkever’s poetry and reveals how, in the darkest times, his poetry became a life-saving source of vitality and strength.

Director: Uri Barbash

“A unique artistically and historically valuable project.” —Jury, Haifa International Film Festival

Israeli Film Festival: Natan Sharansky

Saturday, November 16, 2019 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM <Add to Calendar>

The film crew, which gained permission from Moscow to film in sensitive locations, follows Sharansky back to the prison where he was held after being arrested in 1977 on charges of treason and anti-Soviet agitation. He was held there for nine years, much of it in solitary confinement. Yet against remarkable odds, Sharansky defied the Soviet system and ultimately won the struggle, paving the way for all Soviet Jews.
