When Biology Meets the Bar: Genetic Testing, Reproductive Health, & Policy

Join the Womenʼs Bar Association of Illinois for a one-hour Hybrid CLE program. Sponsored by the Decalogue Society of Lawyers and the Jewish United Fund’s Norton and Elaine Sarnoff Center for Jewish Genetics, this hybrid event offers the option to attend in person (with lunch provided) at the Jewish United Fund in Chicago, or virtually via Zoom. The program will be presented by Dr. Kara Goldman and Scott M. Weissman, and will explore the intersection of modern genetic testing, reproductive health, and the legal and policy frameworks that increasingly shape patient care and access.
Kara Goldman, MD, FACOG is an Associate Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Fertility Preservation at Northwestern University. Scott M. Weissman, MS, CGC, is a Certified Genetic Counselor at the Norton & Elaine Sarnoff Center for Jewish Genetics.
As advances in genomics expand options for carrier screening, prenatal testing, and reproductive decision-making, clinicians and patients must navigate complex ethical, legal, and regulatory landscapes. The program will review preconception genetic testing, pregnancy management, and assisted reproductive technologies, as well as examine how laws and insurance policies influence the use of genetic information in reproductive settings. Attendees will gain practical insight into how these issues affect clinical practice, patient counseling, and access.
