Legal clinic honors attorney Marcie Hefler
BRITTANY FARB GRUBER
Marcie Hefler became an attorney, in part, because she aspired to help others, a principle originally instilled in her by her altruistic parents.
The other part? “Taking organic chemistry during my freshman year of college also told me that I wasn’t going to medical school,” Hefler laughed.
Today, she serves as a partner at Hefler and Lichtenberg, a two-person law firm that primarily focuses on probate litigation. Hefler was named 2025 Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year by JUF Evelyn R. Greene Legal Services, where she uses her professional expertise as a long-valued volunteer, guiding clients through difficult, emotional, and delicate cases.
The attorney approaches her clinic work with a calm demeanor, drawing upon her experience in the mental health field when helping clients and their families navigate challenging guardianship issues. Throughout her tenure as a volunteer, she has proven to be dependable, upstanding, and committed to the clinic’s clients.
“Each case is rewarding on its own,” Hefler explained. “You’re bringing a sense of security, a sense of safety, and a sense of allowing someone to take a deep breath and feel a little better. A lot of the cases are also outside of the norm, so there are often interesting and challenging twists to them. Being able to serve the Jewish community is always an added bonus, too.”
“Marcie so dedicated,” said Jessica Rhoades, Legal Liaison at JUF Evelyn R. Greene Legal Services. “She goes above and beyond to advocate for the clinic’s clients and their loved ones. She never says “no,” which I think speaks to how much she cares about these clients. The honor was overdue; Marcie has been a quiet cornerstone of the clinic for a long time.”
