‘Up to the challenge’

MICHAEL ADATO

In the darkest moments of World War II, a group of brave young German students organized to resist Nazism in the heart of Berlin. Called the White Rose resistance movement, they spoke out on behalf of humanity, freedom, and the protection of innocent lives-even at the cost of their own. Their legacy continues today to inspire individuals who stand for what is right, in the face of adversity.

For over 20 years, JUF’s Israel Education Center has annually presented its White Rose Award to a Jewish teen who demonstrates exceptional courage of conviction, humility, and effectiveness as an advocate for Jews and Israel. The late Herb Rosen-a JUF supporter–was committed to the idea behind the White Rose movement and helped create the White Rose Award. Recipients of the honor promote these values through activism, education, and community involvement, and make a meaningful impact within and beyond our Jewish community.

This year, Lila Selch, an Evanston Township High School (ETHS) senior, has been named the White Rose Award winner. Post October 7 and in the wake of record levels of antisemitism, Selch has stepped up as a proud Jewish leader in her community.

As an elected student representative to the ETHS Working Group to Combat Antisemitism and Islamophobia, Selch co-drafted ETHS Policy #114 to address nationality-based discrimination. She has continued working with her school’s administration to foster a hate-free environment for Jewish students.

“For as long as I can remember, social justice has been an important part of my life,” Selch reflected. “When I entered high school, it was a no-brainer that I’d pursue every opportunity to advocate for equity and stand up against injustice. After October 7, I became dedicated to ensuring that Jewish and Israeli students [felt] welcomed…”

“We are beyond proud that when faced with antisemitism and hatred, Lila proved fully up to the challenge,” said her mother, Tamar Selch. “When met head on with the irrational hatred of antisemites, [she] never shies away from a fight, or retreats into hiding her Judaism, her connections to Israel, or her beliefs.”
