Benjamin “Buddy” Cohen

PAUL WIEDER

Benjamin B. Cohen–known to many as “Buddy”–was a mortgage banker and real estate investor who was driven to help build up his community as well. He died on February 25, at 93.

“Buddy was a brilliant businessman, a loving husband and father, and someone who cared about the Jewish people,” said Dr. Steven B. Nasatir, JUF Executive Vice Chairman. “We had long conversations about Jewish education, and his commitments to Israel and the local community. I was privileged to learn from him and engage with him on various Jewish community matters.”

Cohen made his first gift to JUF in 1954, a sum of $25. By the time of his passing, he had become a Golden Giver–having donated to the JUF Annual Campaign for 50 or more consecutive years.

Cohen’s other charitable work included the establishment of the Jack and Mildred Cohen Religious School at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, in honor of his parents, and the Bernice Cohen Infusion Center at Eisenhower Hospital in memory of his wife.

Growing up in West Rogers Park, Cohen attended Latin School of Chicago. While he lettered in football at the University of Wisconsin, his athletic career ended with a leg injury.

Turning instead to the business world, Cohen scored many touchdowns as a real estate financier–he was instrumental in deals including Lake Point Tower, East Bank Club, McClurg Court, and other landmarks.

Cohen was a partner in Elk Grove Village’s industrial park, the largest in North America. He also founded B.B. Cohen & Company, followed by Cohen Financial.

Cohen was the beloved husband of the late Bernice Grinker Cohen for 63 years. The cherished father of Jack (Nancy), Michael (Julie), Bruce (Lisa), and Julie (Ken) Podziba, he was the adored grandfather of 10. He was the loving brother of the late Lois (Howard) Hirschfield and the late Beverly Baum and brother-in-law of Joan (Grinker) Berke, as well as the extraordinary friend of Sue Quinlan. Funeral arrangements were made by Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home, with internent at Shalom Memorial Park.
