‘Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow’ chosen for One Book, One Chicago
Jewish Chicago
Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow has been selected as the fall 2024 book for Chicago Public Library’s One Book, One Chicago program.
Earlier this year, the novel, which chronicles video game designers-Sam and Sadie, of Jewish descent-was named one of the New York Times ‘ best 100 books of the 21st century.
Despite the book’s acclaim, Chicago bookstore City Lit Books removed it from consideration for their September book club. “It was brought to my attention that the author Gabrielle Zevin is a Zionist,” one of the managers of City Lit Books allegedly wrote in a leaked email. “And I am not comfortable having us reading something by her, especially knowing people would buy it from the store and she would receive monetary support from us.”
Zevin-of Jewish and Korean descent-has never publicized any of her views on Israel, but was criticized after appearing at a February 2023 event hosted by the Zionist women’s organization Hadassah.
As part of the One Book, One Chicago program, Zevin will speak at Harold Washington Library on Thursday, Nov. 14. Learn more at tinyurl.com/gabriellezevinchicago or onebookonechicago.org .
