The Jewish Healing Network of Chicago ensures that information about and access to
social service, health and spiritual resources is available to people facing issues of illness
and loss. We provide referrals to existing services in the Chicago area and create new
services where needed. JHNC is a collaborative project of Jewish Child and Family
Services, CJE SeniorLife, the Chicago Board of Rabbis and Jewish United Fund/Jewish
Federation. Programs, available throughout the community, include:

Chemical Dependency Program

The Chemical Dependency Program provides spiritual programs for people with
chemical dependency and their family and friends, support groups, intervention and
referral to treatment facilities, and education for professionals, religious and community
leaders in Jewish settings about the prevalence of substance abuse in our community and
how to respond.
Generation to Generation: Friendly Visitors to the Elderly and B’nei Mitzvah Visit

Recruits, trains, places and supports members of the Jewish community who make
friendly visits, lead discussion groups or services for Jewish residents of local nursing
homes and assisted living facilities.

Rabbi Joseph Ozarowski is available for short-term work with community members to
address spiritual issues raised by struggles with illness, addiction and loss.

Ensures quality of life for patients and families facing advanced illness in a Jewish
context. JHNC has preferred provider relationships with Seasons Hospice & Palliative
Care and Midwest Palliative and Hospice CareCenter. Seasons and Midwest provide
medical hospice services that focus on comfort and symptom relief; JHNC ensures that
the spiritual and emotional needs of patients are met by a Jewish chaplain, staff training,
educational and spiritual materials, and resources for Jewish religious observance.

Jewish prayers and psalms are available in hospitals throughout the Chicago area for
patients and their families.

Over 300 books, and CD’s provide information about illnesses, medical
organizations, and spiritual resources. Located in Skokie, materials are available to
the community.
Bikur Cholim Training Program

Interactive and educational training offered in synagogues provides guidelines for
visiting the sick. A group of Bikur Cholim coordinators from synagogues throughout
the area meet bi-annually to share successes and challenges.
